Using 3"x6" tile: How do I calculate the rough-in location of my built-in for my shower?

Question:We want to make sure our built-in matches exactly so that the last row beneath our shower built-in is full-sized subway tile and the first row above is a full-sized subway. The dimensions of our built-in will be 5 high (3" width) and 3 high (6" length).

We need to make sure we account for the cement backer board, and felt or other water barrier, the mud, and the thickness of the tile. The last time we tried to do this beforehand it did not work our perfectly.

I'm hoping it works out perfectly this time - with your help!

Answers:
the easiest way to do this is lay out the tiles on the floor in the size that you want it then add 1/2 for wonder board 1/4 inch for rubber and thin set and you should be fine. but because the rubber in the shower only goes about 15 inches up it will get a little bigger at the top of the shower. Good luck

I assume you are talking about a shower niche. See: http://www.bonsal.com/tileproducts_view.

You can always hold off on cutting the opening until the bottom portion is finished.

And there is always some way to overcome those layout "errors"
