How can I make my baseboards water resistant for the bathroom?

Question:The baseboards near the shower have rotted due to water damage, and now I'm ready to replace them. They are wood, and I'd like to replace them with a similar color. What can I put on the new ones to protect them from water damage and keep a light wood color? Any advice on what kind of material to use to replace the baseboards? Thanks!

Answers:
I think wood and plastic are about the only choices for baseboard. Take a sample with you the the baseboard store and they might be able to match it.

You didn't say whether they are stained or painted. If painted use a good oil based primer and oil paint. If they are stained, stain the new ones to match and cover with poyurethane. Make sure you do a test because the poly will change the color slightly. If it is a really bad spot, you might consider exterior products.

Regardless, make sure you check for mold and take care of that first. Caulk really good too.
