Does the window film for keeping out heat in the summer really work?

They sell a film for windows (almost like a tinting film, but not really dark). The idea is that heat is reflected off of the windows to help improve your summer cooling needs.
Does anyone have this kind of product? I'm in dire need to improve my cooling (AC unit is under-sized and I don't have thousands of $$). I'd love to hear a review from someone who has tried this.
Also, any other simple improvements I could make? I've done the obvious: balance the load on air ducts/returns; replace filter; clean compressor and radiator fins.

Yes, we had these films applied to a home we had in Southern California for the very same reasons that you've listed. They are very effective but won't last forever, averaging 12 to 15 years.
But they aren't simple to install and the cost of a professional runs the bill up real quickly.
We found that shades, horizontal aluminum powder coated were as or more effective for keeping the heat out.
For those especially hot days, we put an in the wall air conditioning unit in a smaller room and spent more time there than in other parts of the house. We could get that room down right away with a 120 V unit @12,000 btu
Yes it dose I live in Arizona and the western sun pores down on me , I finely went to wall mart and they have good products that helped
Window film can help reduce ultraviolet light, which is a source of heat gain in a building. However any window treatments will accomplish the same task, i.e. blinds, curtains etc... I would recommend examining your return duct for leakage, checking the insulation level in your attic and perhaps forward me any technical information about your residence (a/c model#'s inside unit and outside unit as well as manufacturer of both, square footage, location of dwelling, type of construction etc...) and I will examine and return a simple analysis. I am an ac contractor in central Florida and deal with these issues all the time. It is possible the solution maybe cheaper than you think! David
Window film does work. Just closing the curtins works too.

Solarex film does work. It does reflect the heat, but makes the room very dark.
