Can two way and one way dimmer switches be used interchangably?

Question:Need to buy dimmer switches.

I need one way dimmer switches, but can only find 2 way units. Can I use a 2 way units instead of a 1 way?

Answers:
Yes, most dimmers are made as 2 way versions to avoid double stocking. To connect to a one way circuit put one cable to 'C' (common) and the other to L1 OR L2. It makes no difference which way round you connect the two cables.

ADDED>>> I assume you are in the UK?? If so ignore the answer below from the US they have different wiring colours and are always giving confusing information.

CLIVE.. All rotary dimmers raise the light when turned clockwise, reversing the connections will have no effect on the operation.

Black is hot , white is common, green is ground.Turn off breaker first.
That will work fine. Ensure that you connect between the common and one of the live terminals. If you wish to reverse the way the switch dims (clockwise to anti-clockwise), leave the common in place and move the other wire to the other live connection in the switch.
Yes you can use two-way. Just use the common terminal and one of the other terminals.
as long as one of them is into common you`ll be o.k
