What's wrong with my toilet? I have to hold the handle down for it to flush completely.?

Question:I replaced the flapper thinking it wasn't sealing right. it had no effect

Answers:
Sounds like the flapper isn't falling all the way back when you push the handle. You can buy a special flapper that has a little bucket on it that will trap water in it when you push the handle which makes it stay back and open longer. I had to install one of them on one of my toilets and it works great.

try shortning the chain between the ball [flapper] and the inner handle
Yeah nothing is wrong with it It is probly the way you set it up or something like that I mean if you lift the lid of the toilet thing on the top you know the back area you`ll see some stuff and tweak something or something like that and you will I am pretty sure be able to set it back to what you want.Good Luck
You might be able to shorten the chain in the tank.
Try adjusting the chain on the flush handle
LOL that is what you have to do to flush a toilet silly!
I don't think anythings wrong with it because ive seen a lot of toilets where you have to do that..I guess its just the type.
You know I have the same frekin problem! I had to change some of the parts but nothing has worked since. So, it could just be the toilet is realllllllllllllllllllllllllll... old! haha.
I would say you have a water saver toilet. Which is trash because you have to flush twice or stand there and hold handle. These toilets have less water in the tank. You can try adjusting the fill level on the fill valve assembly.
If it's an Elgin toilet, that seems to be the way they work. I've owned four Elgins and they all worked that way.
Your chain is too long. You should be able to adjust it and find the right fit. The flapper is closing too quickly and not letting the water out.
Shorten the chain. The flapper is not opening far enough to let the water out.
Try adjusting the chain attached to the flapper, or adjust the float.
Water is leaking under the flapper, because it's not sealing. You can test this by putting food coloring or leak detector pill in the tank. Wait five minutes. If you see the color in the toilet bowl then the flapper is NOT sealing.

You have two choices, replace flush valve unit (big job) OR replace the sealant ring in the flush valve with plastic or stainless steel seat, which is easier.
