if it is a deck , use an oil base primer

Well about this time last year I bought a stain for my PT deck. I followed the manufacturers (Behr) instructions to the letter when I applied it, and now I am looking out at my deck & seeing that the stain is lifting & peeling. (yes it was intended for pressure treated wood)
So according to the guys at Home Depot, & Behr the answer to your question would be YES. But my deck says NO!
I believe you should prime it first but there is a specific primer that you use for the paint to adhere to the chemical from being pressure treated. It has to do with the type of chemical, I believe it may be oil based I havent done it in awhile and the paint takes to it fine. I hope that helps
ok are we talking about paint or stain? I satianed my pressure treated fence ande yes one year later it is fine. you shouldn't have to prime it this is going right into the wood which has not previosuly had any paint/stain applied to it.
Ofcoarse, but it will not stay if exposed to the elements.
The wood needs to be out so that the preserves get out then prime it real good and put a few coats of GOOD paint on it .
Monteki is correct. forget it for a year and then stain with a stain for treated wood. The preservative is "pressure applied" and needs to dry out and go thru several wet and dry cycles you might think of it as evening out then you can stain and feel pretty safe, however if you plan on paint. then you must be aware that paint has more of a sealing feature, meaning that moisture is held inside and the wood is prevented from breathing thus you get the peal and other failure problems.
