I am looking for decorative ideas on covering wood support columns in basement?

You could install drywall on all 4 sides with corner bead on each corner. Once finished, it will be the same texture as the walls.

Agreeing with number one you could also do the same with Birch veneer Ply or other smooth finish material. If so inclined and interested in the effort you could also TUBE the support columns creating a round look, that would have to be finished to look like the style they suggest.

Yep, finish it like you would a normal wall. Dry wall, tape and mud. Prime, paint. Add matching base boards if you like. Then you can even wrape around a little fake ivy if you like, with the fake plant sitting in the pot at the base. Or not.

Good luck!
Google "lally covers" you will find several companies that sell decorative columns that are made specifically for residential applications. They are made of PVC, fiberglass, wood, and even gypsum. The cheapest way to cover them is with drywall, but unless you are proficient with putting on corners, you will not be satisfied.
Home Depot has hollow covers that may fit around them in 2 halves, but it depends on the size. You could also box them in oak veneer board and frame them up using oak decorative trim
tambour wood wrap product, about $80 post (4" pole) available at big orange and blue boxes
You are going to have a hard time selecting a best answer because they are all very good. Seldom do I see so many good answers to one question.
You can get creative with stucco, brick or cultured stone.
