Unapproved use or occupancy, in L.A.?

Question:I've recently received a notice of substandard from the LAHD. How do I fix the basement to satisfy the Department of Building and Safety, to be legal for occupancy (square footage running water, shower, etc.)?

Answers:
Building codes generally require several things for basement dwellers. One is smoke detectors, hard wired, one for each bedroom and one outside the bedrooms. They require two exits through sufficiently sized exits. Some windows are not large enough and may need ladders. Code requires minimum ceiling height. Code requires stairways to have risers of certain height and even spacing with compliant railings. Outlets spaced at prescribe intervals are necessary. If a bathroom or kitchen, exhaust fans or in the bath, an openable window is necessary. There are other things too that are not immediately coming to mind. Get a design professional or contractor in to help you.

youll have to ask the bldg dept. the 2 exits are big things. if its family staying with you.. you might be able to beat it
