Any advice on how to replace a capacitor on a outside AC fan?
Question:Its on a on a Amana RCE36A2A I figure shut down the breaker
remove the panel and replace it ...
Answers:
First, I assume you know its bad. next, with power off expose terminals of capacitor; ever if bad it can hold a charge and zap you. take a needle-nose pliers pull off terminal wires after noting their position. Now discharge cap. by laying a screw driver ( insulated) across both sets of terminals at the same time. You may hear and see a snap! If you do your cap may not be bad. takes a volt-ohm meter or a cap. tester to know for sure.
"Grounded" forgot to tell you to make sure the tools are insulated.
ok first off If you dont know how to do this how do you know its bad? also if it is bad you need to short out the terminal because it may have high voltage still on it when you open it up. also some capacitors (older ones) have a carcinogentic(Causes cancer) oil in it and if it is leaking you need special precautions...
Yes turn the breaker off and remove the disconnect at the outdoor unit(if you have one).Just like "grounded" said remove the wires with a pair of needle nose and discharge any charge in the capacitor by running a screwdriver across the terminals making sure to to touch both terminals at the same time with the end of the screwdriver. No they dont have to be insulated ,you're not working with enough stored voltage to kill you.It will bite a little bit if you get hit but that wont happen if you do what we said to do.After you do that replace the wires on to the new capacitor and wrap terminals with electrical tape to ensure they make no contact with any other components.
