We are putting up a new wooden ceiling beam. Any ideas on how to make it look weathered and old?.?
Question:We are going for the barn-wood look in a new Adirondack-themed room.
Answers:
Consider getting it sand blasted or wire brushed.
That will remove some of the softer wood, and give weathered texture.
Stain the beam well with a colour you like and wipe it off the high points.
The softer the wood, the deeper the profile
they sell various colored stains, plus you could use a chain to beat it.
A lot depends on the type of wood that your new beams are made of. Are they purely decorational, or do they support weight? The color of new wood can certainly be toned down with stains. Knock off any sharp corners with sandpaper. For a really distressed look you can put a couple of coats different color stains on the beam and then selectively sand through the outer layer to reveal the under coat. I recommend gel stains for this because they are very easy to control and you can shade the beam differently depending on how heavy you apply and wipe off the stain. You'll also want to seal the beams with a clear coat (something not glossy) so they can be cleaned in the future. Another idea is to use the real McCoy. It's not unusual to find salvaged barn beams in many parts of the country. There is no substitute for the patina 100 years will give to wood.
you dont have to,, just go to a salvage yard and get an old railway sleeper,,,, theyre made of oak and are only about 20 quid eatch.
good luck
The barn wood look comes from the wood repeatedly getting wet and drying in the direct sun light. The wood will turn gray and get darker over time. You can do this yourself by keeping the piece of wood up off the ground and wetting it with a hose and then letting dry. Remember to turn it so it grays evenly. But this is going to take some time maybe the whole summer before it starts to gray. So stain might be a quicker answer.
