ok... i would say u need to prime it lst then paint or faux finishing it w/ anthr wood grain if that's what u want BUT. since u can't spray inside & it's rather big to remove outside... u'll have to brush the primer on. U may want to invest in some of those sponge brushes that u can get at craft & hardware stores. Use Kilz or Zinseer... then paint whatever color u want or if u'r gonna faux it like wood... u'll need the faux tool ( hardware store or paint store) & the base coat a lighter color that would b simiar to the color u would want the wood & darker color w/ glaze to get the grains. e me & i'll show u a microwave cabinet i did w/ color & faux wood. it's the best way i can explain it.

hope that helps... primer... paint... high gloss to protect from nicks OR u'll have to add a varnish over the flat or satin paint.

While it may sound a bit hokey, the easiest and cheapest way to change the color is to spray paint it... a steady hand and even strokes will come out surprisingly well... REMEMBER, multiple light coats is WAY BETTER than one heavy coat. trust me!
How about a spray stain? Is it stained/painted already? Just make sure every thing is ventilated...
a good primer , and spray it , two coats , please wipe it down before hand with , some kind of cleaner
Have you thought about putting a new veneer covering over the old. It comes in different Wood colors. It's not to thick to cut with a scissor. Different application types. Some are heat applied some are preglued. others you glue. comes in different widths to. If it is a complicated piece of furniture it might take a while to cut and piece new veneer into place but you wouldn't have to move it or take it apart or worry about getting paint on any thing. Hope this helped a little.
Since you said veneer, I assume the shelving has a wooden finish. Also, if you want to change the color to something like green or blue you'll surely have to paint it. However, if you mean you want to change the tone or lightness or darkness or hue of the wooden look, then you have a couple options: You could apply a bleach to the unit to lighten the wood. Apply it sparingly because it will really lighten the color. You wouldn't even have to strip any clear finish on the unit. If you want to darken the color of the wood, you could try applying a darker stain. Try it on a hidden piece first, to see how it reacts without removing any clear finish. I believe it will work. Otherwise, you could lightly rub the finish with steel wool and it will result in a cloudy look. Wipe it down real well, and then apply a darker stain. Finally, there is now a paint that looks like different types of wood which would probably do well also. Again, you may have to scruff up the clear finish with steel wool first, before applying the paint.

good luck
use primer first to paint the shelves and used the same color your painting the shelves
