How do you remove stick on floor tiles backing?
Question:I have discovered the stick on floor tiles have lovely tiles underneath but the glue/backing is stuck firmly to them. Any suggestions how to remove this easily without resorting to chipping away the top layer?
Answers:
try WD40 it has over 1000 uses and removing sticky stuff is one of them . look on www.wd40.com . good luck
you probably can get a chemical remover from a local DIY shop which will do it. it thins the solvent.
wear rubber gloves and maybe you might have to use a face mask.. also have a window open if it gives out fumes.
by mixture of warm water a little alcohal and washing liquid
It depends on what they`re stuck to;most tiles that are self-adhesive,and stuck to a "sound" and stable floor, will come off with the application of warm air and gentle pulling,by hand
DO NOT be tempted to use solvents/cleaners,especially in a confined area!!
hair dryer, putty knife, patience.
white spirits, or even petrol, i would be more inclined to go with white spirits.
put some on a rag, rub onto the area doing about 1ft square or less a time. then using a scraper gently scrape the sticky off. should come off fairly easily.
I have seen an electric paint stripper used very successfully to remove the tiles and the sticky backing, the guy was also using white spirit at the same time to totally remove slight stickiness. It was a total success. These strippers look like hair dryers.
i would say a paint stripper used very carefully depending on what the tiles are below use white spirit very carefully its very powerfull and can damage surface of tiles (been laying floors for over 40 years)
I used white spirit to soften the glue and a wallpaper scraper to scrape it off. It's a long messy job and I don't envy you one bit. It's gonna take you hours!
there's a product called "goof off" works really well on glues. but it is a little strong if you use a lot of it. so ventilate the area well. i use it often and hasn't damaged any type of finishes yet.
