How can you kill mold (it is not toxic black mold) in your basement/attic?
Question:Hello,
Does anyone know how can you kill mold (it is not toxic black mold) in your basement/attic? I have heard that bleach will not kill it, rather just die it a lighter color so that you cannot see it. Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I know there's mold remediation places out there, but we wanted to try to do it ourselves, first. The mold in the basement is not up to the first floor or the rafters, just on lower part of the cement wall.

Bleach will kill it
Even if you buy commercial product to remove bleach such as "no more mould", the active ingredient will still be bleach!
Hi,
I would research a lot online before embarking on it. Mold can be killed with a bleach solution, but you're talking of doing this in your basement where there is limited ventilation and you will be using a strong chemical solution to get rid of mold. This can potentially damage your health. I would suggest that you get 2-3 estimates from companies that do this, rather than attempt it yourself.
In addition to providing adequate ventilation while removing or treating mold, you have to ensure that the method used to remove it doesn't actually make the tiny microscopic pores airborne only to settle later on another surface in your basement. Then you'll have to repeat the whole process. Get the estimates and see if you can get it done by a professional, not risk your health, get a warranty on the job and enjoy a mold-free basement.
I would call a water proofing company. I used to work at Everdry and that's what they specialized in. You could at least get some new ideas on things to try.
google. home remedies for mold
I had this same problem. I used a hose sprayer and where one would put fertalizer I used brown bottle Lysol. It worked great!.
The basement immediately smelled better also.
While I still have a wet basement, it has been a year and no mold has regrown.
the bleach thing isn't totally true.
Get some DampRid mold blocker, depending on where the mold is will determind if you can kill it or not, because if it is a common area that mold will always grow, you will be fighting a loosing battle, but this is your best bet for controling it.
Before you use the DampRid, get bleach and scrub the area down. makes sure it is really good a dry then spray the DampRid Mold Blocker on it to protect it. Follow directions on the container or repeat the process according to your own needs of mold growth. Also DampRid sells these small buckets with cristals in it that soak up moisture and when the cristals are gone, dump it out and put new ones in it, You can get most DampRid products at walmart or a grocery store, but the DampRid Blocker wasn't in stock all winter were I live so I had to order it online, I did a search and found it on a home product website. It works so good I bought a whole case.
I will not use anything else, this did a great job.
10% bleach... put a fan or 2 down there and do a little at a time (15 minutes at most) to prevent inhaling too much
if your voice becomes hoarse you know you have been doing too much with bleach
Bleach will kill it if it is not too deep.
