Plaster Wall Question...?

Question:I'de like cut through a plaster wall in my room so I can the TV cables inside the wall. How easy would it be to fix the wall by myself?

Answers:
Depending on the end size of the hole you make it is fairly easy to fix.
If the hole is no more than the size of a soft ball this should work.
Place a wad of newspaper into the hole, enough so it dosen't slip out of place.
Put a piece of webbing about two inches larger than the hole.
The webbing can be bought at Home Depot or Lowes in the painting section. It has a sticky back so it will stay put once you peel the backing off.
Mix up plaster of paris in a bucket and apply evenly onto the patch you made.
Make sure you make it squish through the holes in the webbing. Make it level with the wall and smooth. If you have tecture on the wall don't worry about it now. Let the Plaster dry and then sand smooth and flush once dry.
After sanding you can add tecture if needed.
Good luck

If you are talking about drywall, it's very easy to fix even for a novice, but it will take some time to do.

If you are talking about plaster and lathe walls (plaster & wooden slats), there are MUCH harder to fix, but not impossible. With plaster and Lathe walls, the plaster is at least 80 years old and will crumble easily especially if you break the wooden lathe behind it. It can be repaired the same way as drywall, but it takes more time, is more frustrating to get a nice smooth skim coat of compound and is more likely to crumble in the future.

I would suggest that you go to Lowe's and get a "how to" book on drywall techniques that will run you through everything that you need to know & will only set you back about $15. Good luck-
If you hole is big enough to fit your fist through it then you will need to put a piece of drywall in there and go over it.
To cut the drywall piece measure the dimensions of the hole ( L & W).
Cut your piece of drywall about an inch larger on all four sides, then turn it over and trim that inch of plaster off - leave the paper backing in tact.
Now you can carefully push it into the hole and the backing will overlap the existing wall.

Get some "Nylon Mesh Tape" and go over the paper backing over lapping onto the wall. Place the tape over that paper backing.

Now mix some plaster together and give it a nice " Even" and "Very Thin" coat. Allow this to dry before apply a second coat - then sand it with a fine grit of about 150 Grit sandpaper.

In sanding remember you are only concerned with getting the Patch work even with the surrounding wall surfaces. You do not want gouges, or holes but do want it all even. Then you can paint over it and it will be undetectable for the most part.

Your plaster mixture should be of the consistancy of cake batter - a tad runny but not to the extreme. You want it to fill in very easily and you don't want to mess around too long 'cause it will begin to thicken / harden rather rapidly and in a short period of time ( depending on temperature and moisture / humidity) it will become unworkable. So if you have a large hole work at a steady pase and do not mix an aweful lot of plaster at one time.
