How can slow down or alter my electric ultilty meter? just curious?

Question:

Answers:
The people that I rent my house from altered my meter.
When I moved in my NORMAL monthly bill was somwhere around $6. I actually thought that was my payment and paid EVERY bill on time. DISCLAIMER: I just got divorced and had NO idea how much I was paying for electricity (MY WIFE PAID ALL OF THE BILLS) Well you all know what comes next----- 4 years later SCE came knocking at my door demanding $6,600 in back charges. Thank GOD the PUC (public utilities commission) came to my rescue. They have a LAW that says I can't be held liable for any charges over 90 days. Since this bill was normally $6 per month for the last 8 years. I was found innocent of TAMPERING WITH A PUBLIC UTILITY which carries a HEFTY penalty in California.

I ended up settling for $662. Now my NORMAL bill is about $100.

Save yourself a LOT of trouble and don't do it!

use less electricity
That is so hilarious! I was JUST thinking that to myself today?! Can't wait to see the answers! ;) Good luck with that!
You can slow it down by using less electricity. Use the clothes line instead of the dryer, turn off lights when not in the room, don't leave electrical items on stand-by, switch off at the power point anything your not using, cut down on items that have a continuous display, open curtains during the day to let in natural light.
If you have electric hot water, make sure it takes advantage of off peak electricity.
Anything done to the meter is illegal.
oh my gosh! i was wondering if i could do that yesterday when i got my electric bill!
there is no 'legal' way to do it. make friends with the meter readers :D
go online and check this web site www.on-timeelectric.com we installed this called a power saver it wil slowdown ur meter trust me
Oh My God! I Know how to do that! Go to my e-mail and I'll tell you. ( it's A SECRET) Bye
actually you can bypass the meter ,by cutting into the drywall from inside the house, below the meter and cut into the metal sleeve that runs power to your house. But more than likely youll cut through the sleeve and into the cable and electrocute yourself. Thats how all these "pot houses" use power and dont get noticed by by utility companies !
Place a nickel or a dime whichever fits in order to stop spinning part for about two days then take it out use for 5 or so days then put it back in. The electric company will never know unless they decide to check your outside meter when you have the wheel stopped. Budget billing if available would not be wise.

This is highly illegal and I don't recommend it though.
there was an old story that went around many years ago that you could spray sugar water on the cable leading into the meter or out of it and ants would crawl in there and get meshed in the gears and slow it down , but i think this would qualify as an urban legend...sounds like a case for myth busters...
Just use less electricity. Any other idea about messing around with the utility's meter is illegal and can get you in jail with a big fine and worst, get you killed.
It is illegal to interfere with your metre box and down right dangerous.
OK everyone pay attention. There are many ways you can do this. You can place something across the lugs to bypass the meter but this will probably result in you getting electrocuted. You could open the meter and file off some teeth on the main worm gear but the chances of you getting all of the tamper tags back in place are slim to none and any decent meter man will see it has been altered. Some people also think that if you put your meter in upside down then it will run backwards, this is not the case. what will happen is you will end up breaking the thing and then try to explain to the power company why you need a new meter. Oh and that sugar water thing has been tried many times and the only thing you get is a family of bees that move in to your siding.
