That would be aiding and abetting a burglar I would think!
I assume this is an interior door ( like into a bedroom or spare room). If so, the knob should have a small round hole in the center on the knob ( on the end if you look at the knob straight on). The key is just a piece of straight wire with a loop on one end to hold onto. Just in sert the straight piece straight into the hole, you should feel it hit a plate about 5/8" of an inch into the hole, when it does just push it in a little further and you should here the door unlock.
the previous comment was close. insert the wire key into the hole in the center of the knob. the wire key has a flattened end that needs to go in plumb (12 oclock - 6 oclock). when inserted into the hole you will hit the base, but probably miss the slot. move the key around until the key finds the slot. once in the slot push to pop the push button type of lock, turn counter clockwise (clockwise in australia (ha ha)) to untwist the turn type lock. remember to put the key back when done.
I think you are talking about a lever lock, the key has the blade at right angles to the shaft. The easier type has two flat levers inside the case that require to be lifted to different height to let the bolt slide back. The tool is very similar to a Allen Key, putting the hook end in.
A more secure lock has three levers.
I guess you have actually got the key so if you look to see if has a number and letter on if the number is above 12 it is a 3 lever. 1-12 could be either, and they can be bought at the local hardware store
It requires a file but that is all I will say.
PS if you have the nerve take the lock out of the edge of the door and take the cover off, very carefully otherwise you will have springs and levers all over the place. Once you understand how the work on the inside you will work out how they are picked.
The easiest way is to gently pry the moulding away and use a credit card and slip it between the door and door frame.
If you have an old fashioned lock, you may ask your friendly locksmith to loan you a set of "stick" keys, then buy the correct key from him when you've solved the problem. If you already have a stick key, first get a tube of graphite from your local hardware store; then try your key while "jiggling" it in different depths into the lock.
