Teflon Tape or Putty for Gas Line?

Question:I am assembling Black pipe for gas line and saw both Yellow teflon tape and putty to seal the joints. Which would be best. How much should I use.

Answers:
Use the teflon tape AND the pipe dope. The dope is also a lubricant to help the pipe tighten easier. I always use 5 wraps of tape. I;m an old pipeliner that used to pipefit gas wells with 1500 pounds preasure. Most home lines have about 30. I have yet to have a leak in either. Make sure you put the tape on in the proper direction or it will just peel off. With the threads facing you, go clockwise and when putting the dope on go the same direction or again you'll peel the tape off. Use a soapy mixture to test for leaks.

PUTTY, for a gas line because you do not want to cause any static electricity, duh! Sandy S. Husband Joe answered!
If you have to ask a question like this, I would have your gas company oversee the fitting of your pipe or call and ask them. Or a plumber. It'd really ruin your day to blow your *** up.
Teflon tape will work but I like to use "pipe dope" comes in a can at your local home center
Make sure the threads are clean apply dope to male and female pipe screw together tightly repeat at each pipe joint
Teflon either tape (cleaner & neater) or teflon pipe dope. Tape at least two layers. Dope, a liberal coating.
Putty hardens and makes it impossible to loosen. It also gets brittle with age.
I used white teflon tape for the interior flex pipe hookup for the drier. I recommend either, key is test the pipe for leaks afterwards with soapy water solution to look for leaks.

Never test with a lighter, even though I have seen the supposed pro's do it. :)

How much? Plenty! Cover all the threads with the tape! Just wrap it around the end past how far it screws in.
Pipe dope is the most cost effective way to do it. If for some reason you want to use Teflon tape make sure it is rated for gas lines. The white stuff is not approved for gas use.
use a Teflon based pipe dope and just apply it on the threads, don't use Teflon tape unless you are careful not to wrap it over the end of the pipe, doing so could allow tape to become lose inside the pipe ending up into your units. Make sure you install a drop leg at each unit to catch any dirt or moisture in the lines. A drop leg is merely a tee in the line with a 3" min nipple and a cap pointing down to allow anything to drop into it.
