How do you get a scratch out of brass?
Question:I have a big brass button on my leather purse, and it has a scratch on it. I polished it with this brass polish, but it didn't make the scratch any less prominent.
Does anyone know how to get a scratch out of brass? Can brass be buffed just like other metals? If so, what do you use, and where do I get it? Do I take it to someone? Thanks for any advice you can give.
Answers:
If it's solid brass use wet/dry sandpaper (very fine) and sand the scratch out or use jewelers rouge which is a polishing compound. once the scratch is smoothed out use a brass polish (Brasso, Never Dull...) When you have your high shine use clear fingernail polish and cover it to help prevent tarnishing.
yes you can buff brass like any other metal. try a shoe repair shop. they mite be the best to help you.
You can buff a scratch out of solid brass, but don't try it if your button is brass plated. It will reveal the base metal, which will probably corrode.
If you have a magnet, like a refrigerator magnet you can use it to test your button. If the magnet is attracted, don't try to buff the scratch out.
Use a fine steel wool to rub and polish, then use your brass polish to coat and keep from tarnishing. This should work if it is not too deep of a scratch. Good luck.
If its solid brass then the easiest way is to use a moto drill, with attachments. That drill spins far faster than a regular drill. I have used mine to clean brass outside door handles after years of use. Look great when done.
