Speaker Wires?
Question:i have an old stereo system, and I was wondering if you can use regular wires as speaker wires...y'know, those red and black wires.and if not, why? guaranteed 10 points to best answer, and this is urgent! Thanks!
Answers:
For an old system, you can use thin "bell" wire you have around the house. Newer, higher-powered systems would be taxed by using thin gauge wires.
However, a better 'in a pinch' option is to use an old 2-wire extension cord, cutting the plug and outlet off either end and stripping the wires.
Good luck-
...
yes, they were designed to use this type of wire.
As long as they are not a super thin wire and the wires are multistrand they will be fine.
you can, but remember the thicker the gague of wire, the better the sound your speakers will give
Any kind of copper wire is fine. The thicker the better.
The best thing to do is to go to Home Depot or Lowes and purchase regular 110 AC cord unless you are carrying a high wattage on your amp, but it would have to be really high to need anything else. You can tell polarity with the clear power cord, I am talking about lamp wire, because one of the wires is silver and the other gold - that will help you maintain the sanctity of your system to have them connected properly.
The skinny speaker wires that come with a lot of stereos are way too small in my opinion, probably 24 gauge, and I think the normal lamp power cord is about 18 (but I am not sure).
