If you are an urban dweller rather than rural, I would use a pellet gun. It is quiet so as not to disturb or even inform neighbors and its projectile will not carry very far past a missed target.
Do your really want to kill them? You have other options such as buying squirrel traps and after you trap them, relocate to a park, a forest, or any place that is heavily wooded. Please don't trap them and then let them starve to death. A lady that lives next door to my friend was doing this and my friend finally after getting fed up with her letting them die, got the lady to let her grandson take them to a local park and release them. Even if you kill them there will be more move into the new territory. It's more sensible to relocate the family. Have a heart, please!
