Drywalling an unfinished garage in a Victorian house?
Question:I would like to finish the walls and ceiling in my garage, but there's a spaghetti mess of pipes, wires, vents and other obstructions mounted over the frame that could turn this weekend project into a nightmare. Is there a way of bypassing all this?
Answers:
Build another wall on inside of yours. it could be out of 2x3 or nail a 2x2 0r 2x3 on studs to shim out past all problems and drywall.
I'd just put a suspended ceiling in and get drywall panels (make you own and paint ) this way you can get to everything up there and still looks finished. Good luck I know about old homes I grew up in a 1890 farm house.
You can frame over all that stuff to put drywall up but make sure that there is some kind of access to it all just in case something happens later down the line.
best way may be to build a wall infront of the mess to put your dry wall on. short of that you will need to reroute the wires and pipes inside the wall
...there is a 'system' to hang a suspended lid in a room...you hang a grid, install tiles, and fixtures, and that's it..dun deal...
Obviously your garage is attached, and apparently there is plumbing involved, so there must be some sort of heat , so...don't obstruct the ventilation flow for that.
If the walls are involved with interfering projections, and the pipes, wireing, or other protrusions are hung on the studs - - you would do well to relocate them into the dead space above the grid line of the suspended celing.
Sounds like a grand undertakeing... have fun, and it will all go together ..
If all those obstructions are in the ceiling area and not the walls, then Sheetrock the walls and then install a suspended ceiling. With a suspended ceiling, you will always have access to the pipes just in case you need to. This will be much cheaper and faster than lowering the ceiling with lumber and then sheet rocking.
There are many types of ceiling tiles that will work in a garage with various textures and finishes. We have used pieces of Sheetrock and made our own tiles however, you can buy tiles that are textured Sheetrock but am unsure of costs.
I hope that this helps you with your question. Good luck with your project.
