How to paint brass?
Question:is there a way to paint a brass bed?if so what kind of paint? the spray paint will probly run down right?
Answers:
Why on earth would you want to paint brass
You need a metal primer first before final coat of paint. What I would do though rather than paint, is polish it and spray on some clear lacquer in what ever gloss you like. It will look good for a long time if you don't beat up the lacquer.
im guessing if you want to paint a brass bed it must be pretty beat up. first you need to rough it up with sandpaper. then wipe it down with mineral spirits (paint thinner) then use a metal primer, after that dries use a good quality finish coat (if you use spray paint make sure the primer and the finish coat are compatable) if its in not too bad of shape and you would rather it be brass try a brass cleaner then polish
Brass is different than other surfaces you may paint because it, as well as other alloys of copper, will corrode. These corrosion particles may adhere tightly or loosely. Either way, the particles must be removed by a pretreatment process before painting. Follow these easy steps.
Remove oily soils and other materials by cleaning the brass with degreaser or strong detergent.
Remove any corrosion by abrading the surface using sandpaper, wire brushes or an acid such as a bright dipping solution; or by applying a chromite pretreatment.
Use an epoxy primer as soon as possible after pretreatment Paint the brass with a metal paint of the desired color.
Apply a polyurethane topcoat to seal the paint and prevent future corrosion..
Why do you want to paint it? Better if you just leave it to have an antique finish.
Get out a tin of brasso and give it a damn good cleaning and clear lacquer it. It is a shame when work like that is ruined, because ruin it you will. Sorry

Main thing is prep.
You could use a liquid solvent paint stripper, but that could be overkill unless any existing laquer is in bad shape.
A good cleaning w/ bronze wool & a degreaser ( prepsol )
should be all you need.
Also at this point any dings can be filled w/ auto body filler putty.
Spraycans are fine if you take your time & keep the piece clean.
Auto primer will highlight any bad spots which can be lightly wet/dry sanded & reprimed.
2 or 3 coats of auto paint for finish color w/ wet /dry paper in between if necessary.
Auto paint is very durable & can be finished off w/ car wax for good measure.
Will find more of a "designer" color selection w/ Krylon or Rustoleum.
Question is why would you want to paint a brass bed unless it is a cheapo plated one that has seen better days.
Take your time & you can expect very good results.
Best regards
