How to revarnish pine cabinets?
Question:Pine cabinets net refinishing
Answers:
Give it a light sanding with some 100G paper, then go over again with 180G paper.
Dust down and coat.
sand down with rough sandpaper, then a finer sand paper. clean with a damp cloth and then varnish
first wash with soap and water, then dry. This removes grease and wax that clog sandpaper. Use something like Pine Sol for washing floors.
then sand. Start with 80 grit, then go to 100, 120, 150 ,200.
Most of the material is removed with the 80 grit, and it cuts fast.
It is faster, and easier to use each grade on the way to 200 grit, because they make ever finer scratches as they smooth down to the bottom of the 80 grit scratches.
Do not bother going finer than 180 or 200 grit, because that is ideal for the varnish to stick to, and the varnish makes the smooth surface.
Do not shake the varnish, but stir it to mix. This avoids bubbles in the varnish.
Use a bristle brush with no loose bristles.
Apply the varnish in a scrubbing motion with the brush, then drag it out smooth with the grain. This gives good penetration and a smooth finish.
Work small areas at a time and maintain a wet edge for the next bit you cover.
Do not over brush, as it sets up fairly quick and extra brushing leaves it with a brush print under the surface.
