If i bought a 1/2 shank router, can i use 1/4 shank tips? is there a adaptor?

Question:i bought my husband this great digital router for when he comes home from iraq, and bought some router tips to go with it, but I just noticed the router is 1/2 in. shank, and the tips are 1/4 inch , are they compatable with a adaptor?

Answers:
If the router was designed to take 1/2 it will be of a rotational speed to match
If you use a1/4 then the rotational speed will be too fast [unless it has a variable speed control]
if it does not? and you use the 1/4 even with an adapter, you take the chance of the shank shearing and flying about Very Very dangerous I think you should get the correct ones for the Router. You don't want him to come home from Iraq safely and get hurt by DIY tool

yes they are
Why dont you take them back and exchange themWhen you use more parts than inteded, it will weaken the router.
an adapter, will weaken this machine.
My router takes both sizes.
if its 1/2 shank there is an adapter to use with1/4 tips.
If your router accepts 1/2 shank bits, using 1/2 bits is better than using 1/4 shank bits because the 1/2 shanks are stronger, and will not break as easily. During routing, a router bit can snap at the shank if under enough stress. Obviously this is not desired. Using 1/2 shanks is safer than 1/4 shanks. Your best course of action is to take back the 1/4 shank bits and get a set with 1/2 shanks.
ya most routers come with a 1/4 Collete so you can use both
There should be a couple of collets, one for 1/4" tips and another for 3/8" ones.
I'd be interested to know what make of router you bought, I don't think I've ever seen a digital router. Usually routers come with two collets 1/2" and 1/4" if yours didn't I would ask at the shop where you purchased it.

As to bits either size is good , in 30 plus years of using a router I've never broken or bent a bit with a 1/4" shank.
