Question:the door will close and if its locked it will say but slightly open i have to use a door jam to keep it closed. can i just replace the wood where the locks go into? or do i have to replace the whole frame?

Answers:
I am sure you could just replace the damaged part, however it wouldn't be as strong, and possible make more problems, like the door not wanting to shut all the way. You are better off getting a new door frame. If you are having problems with people kicking in your doors, try a metal frame. Its a little more expensive, but it will keep you from replacing wooden frames all the time.

You have to replace the whole door frame. Locally I found the frame and door combo for $265. I just did this a few months ago for an apartment that I have for rent.
You need to replace the jamb on the side that's broken. The easiest way is to take the door off (just pull the hinge pins) and get it out of the way. Remove the trim, and the broken jamb.

If it was a pre-hung door, you may run into trouble trying to get the jamb out, as most pre-hung doors have a rabbet cut in the jambs that the top plate is set into.

Just install a new jamb, mortise it for the lockset, reinstall the trim. caulk and paint. Good as new!
if the damage is isolated to that portion of the frame you might be able to replace it. first you must remove the molding and with a sawsall free whatever size piece of the frame that encompasses the damage (or that entire side). after you remove outer and doorstop molding, cut across the frame above and below the damage (carefull not to cut the stud) and replace with a like piece of wood. if the door is still hung properly use it to locate the hole for the bolt-drill and remount your hardware and molding. tada!
dude if you still have the peice of wood that broke off just fit it back in and screw it in ive know how to kick a door in right and so then all you have to do is screw the piece back in you dont need a new dor fram if you can fix it
Replace whole door frame. We had the same problem at a rental unit as well. How come people don't know how to take care of something that is not theirs? (Sorry:)
Good Luck!
