There's about a million and one ways that could have been wired, your best best is do just put it up the same way you took the old one down...
both.black more so than the red..be sure you ground them.that is a green wire...
i say dont do it if you dont know what your doing but thats my opinon
the black wire or the red wire can be hot, if you are using a 3-way switch.if not black to black white to white and green ground.
the black and the red are hot the red is called a traveler used for 3 way switches , 2 switches 1 light . popular mechanics will give you a printable schematic for this .
