Try using 'Rustoleum-Hammered look--in copper .
Use a spray can. I just got done redoing a porch railing and a solar light. I used it last year and it worked and looked great. The 'hammered' kind helps hide some imperfections.
you should just polish the brass with brasso or something.

The copper paint looks cheesy. There was an eposode of flip that house on A&E and this kid was too cheap to buy real copper fixtures for his house he was going to sell, so instead went to home depot bought cheap black ones and sprayed them with copper paint.
Looked like crap!
Try Tarn-x it does wonders on old dull metals
