My coffee table is wobbly.i put it together myself but am not sure how to make it stable.?
Question:The coffee table was pretty cheap so i guess i got what i paid for but i'm sure there is something i buy or do to tighten it. Who's got the answer?
Answers:
Take it apart and use wood glue wherever parts join. Hand screw the screws lightly then go back and screw the screws tightly on the diagonal. Let sit overnight, if the holes are too big, wooden shims will tighten the joint. Toothpicks will work in a pinch. Failing that you can add wooden triangle braces or some of those little metal support brackets, make sure that you pre-drill any screw holes that you might add.
Before you do any of the above, make sure that all parts are accurate; legs equal length, braces, etc. Sometimes parts can be defective within the box. Parts can be missing. Screw holes drilled at wrong angle. If that's the case return the table to place of purchase. A missing glide on the legs will make a table uneven also.
Good glue will stiffen up any joints.
Go to hardware store and get corner brackets. They are L shaped and come with screws. I'm assuming the legs are square. Attach to leg and the underneath of table. Place them where you can't see them. This will stablize your legs and will keep them from wabbling, or at least, they did on my homemade coffee table. From now on don't slide table when moving it, pick it up to move. Puts less stress on legs. If the legs are round, try Gorilla Glue. It works great on wood.
For a quick fix, wedge some wood matches into the gap that's causing the wobble.
If the legs are the screw in ones, just tighten them. If they aren't, then take the table back.
Use Elmers wood glue and clamp it together some kind of way. Even if you can use screws still use elmers wood glue too.
