You need to remove the cover and probably the drain stopper mechanism that is on the side of the tub above the drain. Put your snake down the this clean out and you should be good to go.
Pour some Dawn dish soap & some ammonia into the tub, in the drain area. Let it set a little while, then put a plunger over the drain & plunge vigorously. Repeat the steps as often as needed. FYI: You can buy a little plastic cover that has holes in it, to allow the water to go down, that goes over the drain to catch hair, etc. You can clean it after each use & it will keep your tub from getting clogged. You can find these at Wal*Mart, etc. I saw the plastic ones in the grocery store. They are well worth the money.
Tried the plunger? I know it's the wrong bit of porcelain, but it'll work there too sometimes.
Usually in the tub, its caused by hair. They make a plastic tool - long and with hooks on it - very flexible... look in hardware stores - specially made for hair.
First use a plunger to force the water down. Some older homes have a drum trap that can be opened and cleaned under the tub area - especially visible if tub is on first floor and there is a basement. If pipes are accessable below - you can dis-connect or cut the pipes - clean them out and re-attach.
You can do it!
Have your local volunteer fire department stop by and put the hose over the drain hole. These hoses run anywhere from 300-500 PSI of water pressure and will blast the clog free.
There may be some minor backsplashing, so run the hose through the window , seal the bathroom door shut and stuff with sandbags.
Good Luck
Muriatic acid usually works on clogs but you have to be careful handling it. It also stinks. Another option is getting a bladder and trying it. I'm not sure if bladder is the technical term but that's what my husband calls it. It goes on the end of your garden hose and you put it in the drain. Then it expands and shoots the water through the drain forcefully. It usually works.
