Foundation of house past where my vinyl siding will go.?

Question:I am putting vinyl siding on an older house. I took the old wood slats off the house leaving just the sheathing around the house since there was a lot of water damage and rot. When I put my siding on the sheathing, the foundation sticks out past the vinyl about 1/4-1/2 inch. Should I put flashing up or should I put j channel around the whole foundation. I do not want water to come down the side of the house, hit the foundation and rot my sill plate away over time. Thanks!

Answers:
You need a drip cap to cover the top of your foundation. Aluminum is your best bet. It will need to be formed based upon your actual dimensions. It should extend up behind your siding at least 6", extend slightly past the outside edge of the foundation and have a short lip sticking out at a 45 degree angle or so. I would hem the edge that is sticking out (fold the aluminum back under to form a finished edge).

You will either need to find a break (tool used to bend large pieces of aluminum) or have someone make these pieces for you. I don't know of a standard piece that will fit what you need.

You only need starter strip it should cover the 1/4 inch difference treat it as a flat wall. J-channel if necessary. Paper appropriately
John: I had this same problem when I sided my house. My plate was already starting to rot. I put up a flashing and painted it the same color as the siding, You can't tell the difference. It woked for me.
