The new house we are going to rent has dark wood panneling help.?

Question:Its not got very big rooms and to top it off it has horrible dark wood panneling in it. I cant take it down but I can do what ever I want to it so long as it looks nice. Any ideas that wont break my budget or my back?

Answers:
Whatever you do, do not try too strip it. The cheapest thing you can do is lightly sand the surface. Then prime it, then you can paint it. If you decide to paint you may find it necessary to use a dark color paint just because of the dark paneling. A good idea is too have the primer you use tinted to accent the color of paint you use. Hope this helps.

Strip the finish and put a light stain on it

or sand and paint it.
I would definately paint it. You will probably need to sand it then put a layer of Kilz and then paint it a nice fresh light color! :)
Dont try stripping it.. For the old wood panneling you wont get it to look right.. Sand it lightly to scuff it up and paint it whatever shade you want. If the house was smoked in, you will want to make sure you prime it first to keep the tar residue from bleeding through.
I would put a light paint on it. See if they have paint on sell.
Not sure what your colors are... but maybe you can drawl the attention to the windows.. curtains., swags.. something bright.
Then get a rug to match put under coffee table- some little pillows on the couch. All light colors.. drawling your attention away.
Go somewhere like Target.. don't spend too much money.
I would use wood filler, sand, then paint it. You won't even be able to tell that was paneling, it will look like a normal wall.
Buy some Kilz primer, then you can paint it whatever color you want. You can also buy the type of paint with texture and just roll that over the primer.
My house was almost all wood paneled. We are redoing it one room at a time with sheet rock but in the meantime just painting it is what we did. It doesn't look as good as drywall, but looks a lot better than the dreary dark brown everywhere.
First prime the dark panneling with Kilz primer. Be sure to read the directions on the can. Get plenty of ventilation ! Now then paint the walls remembering that the lighter the shade of paint will give teg illusion of a bigger room.
Ok, first of all do not try to stain it any other color. There is no way you will get it to look right. It probably isn't even real wood. All you need to do is prime it thoroughly with any good grade primer it doesn't need to be kilz. Then use a wide blade putty knife or drywall knife and fill any grooving with drywall mud. You can even apply a second coat with a texture roller and give it some real depth. Or just leave it smooth and prime and paint it the color of your choice. I promise you won't even be able to tell its paneling. If you do decide to leave the first coat of mud smooth the make sure to use a thick nap roller to apply your paint it will hide many more of the imperfections in the wall.
i had something like that. I put up a light/ white afghan that i got at a thrift store. it looked very nice. it brightened up the room, hid the ugly wallboard and as i was on a limited budget it saved me there as well.

When i got tired of that i hung photos that were framed in white on the wall, didn't hide it as well but it was a change.

I just thought of something.. try to paint the other three walls in a light, ot whit color and leave on wall with the panelling to use as a back drop. just lightly sand the panelling. it will take a while and it will be quite dusty, not good to do it if you have children in the house, for yourself wear a mouth mask
Old house same problem. This is what I used.

Been on for 11 years hasn't come loose or peeled. Paint any color. My wife has changed color 3 times . Holds paint very well.
