Anybody know how to convert a freestanding stove/oven from natural gas to propane?
Question:I have a stove that is equipped for natural gas. Only problem is, I use propane in my home. How easy is it to convert it? It's a GE freestanding gas stove/oven.

How confidant do you feel, in your ability to perform a task, that done incorrectly, could cause a fire? Does your insurance cover accidental loss of life or property, based on your changing out all the orifices in your stove and cook top? Why even consider performing this, when your health, and your families health is at risk? Call a certified plumber, or appliance technician. They will do the job correctly, and they have insurance, making them liable for any problems. The stove MUST be labeled in conspicuous places, with labels, stating that it has been converted, and by whom, the company name, and the date of conversion. Good luck!
some stoves come, made for both. check with the gas company. propane, that is. they would probably do it for you.
I don't think it is difficult (have had this situation several times). However, you should call someone from the gas company to change it over. I was looking for someone to service a gas stove and hot water tank. I was told to call the propane company because they are familiar with the flow, temperature settings of propane.
It took no time at all.
Belle; the gas & power companys won't do it for you. Its a labor & parts thing, but no biggi.
All you have to do is change the orfice the gas flows through for about 5 bucks or have an appliance stores service dept instruct you how to get it changed.
Go prepared with name and model numbers in hand so he can look up the right appliance and he can either give you/sell you the pipe orfice or direct you to a place that'll get it done for you.
all in all it shouldn't cost you a twenty dollar bill and a little running around.
Change the orifice in the burner from natural gas to propane.
Any heating and plumbing store will carry the part and it takes only a few minutes to make the conversion. If you need help, call your local mobile home or travel trailer repair shop for leads on a technician that is experienced with propane.
I went by the local mobile home supply shop and the techician said he would make the house call and change the part for $35 on Saturday. Do an internet search for your local area or stop by any mobile home park and ask the manager to speak to their maintenance guy.
If you go to your local hardware store they can help you. You need to buy fittings for each burner. I did this for our camp stove when we moved a trailer on the lot. They will need to ask you some questions about the stove too. Maybe a hardware/plumbing supplier would be best.
Belle, the orifice is also called a jet. Don't worry, it's a safer job than you think.
Check with GE. Manufacturers provide conversion kits with instructions for that.
You have to change (or drill out if you're handy) the jets. You're propane dealer should be able to do it or at least recommend someone.
Hi If the unit is new (1 yr or less) Call 1800 GE Cares and they will do it for you under warrentee. If not there are several things you must do to convert and adjust. Is it New? PS the conversion orifices come with the unit they are just hidden.
i really cant believe the advise you have been given it is actually illegal to work on natural gas/propane burning units without a licence call a technician please before you go kaboom
Go to any place that sells appliances, tell them the make and model of your range and they can order the orifice kit you need. They are very easy, safe and quick to do yourself. It shouldnt take longer than 30-40 minutes to complete. Most who tell you not to do it are afraid of natural gas and propane but you wont be making the change while the stove is hooked up.
if you are uncomable about doing this yourself , let pro do it for you. easy to do yourself.screw out the old one ,screw in the new one.
Simple solution is to ask GE - since it is their product and they are legally responsible for it's safe operation - maybe they do provide a kit to safely convert the stove. I used to make my own parts to do that when I worked in a Lightbulb factory and had to make burners to melt and shape glass into lightbulbs. The only real difference is the size of the orfice in the burner which must be much smaller for propane. If you used the Natural Gas orfice with propane the flames would be to large and too hot to be safe.
It is noti ILLEGAL and you can purchase a naew orfice form Lowes or stores that sell parts for gas stoves. It is not difficult to make the change. Just make sure you provide the company with the model & serial number so they can order the exact size orfice for you.
gas is gas i had a friend who had her gas cut of so she just bought bottle gas and some jubilee clips and piped it up no probs except maybe cooked a bit quicker ??
Belle, check your owners Manuel for the conversion info.newer models of most appliances have needle caps that merely need to be adjusted for the proper gas and it will also tell you how to adjust the pressure regulator.LP.and NG. have different operating pressures
