Bought a new a/c, 110 volt. Didnt notice the receptacle was 220.?

no, you cannot just disconnect one of the "hot" wires and tape it up. you will need a neutral wire to create your circuit.
it would be easier to exchange the unit at this point, be sure you examine your 220 receptacle to see the current rating so you new unit will plug in without having this problem again(20 or 30 amps)
A 220 volt receptacle is simply two 120 volt (black) hot wires attached to a circuit breaker, plus a neutral wire and a ground wire. Go down to your circuit breaker, and WITHOUT ELECTROCUTING YOURSELF, disconnect one of the 120 volt hot wires. Then put a wire nut on it and electrical tape on the wire and wire nut. To do this, it is recommended that you first shut off the main circuit breaker in your circuit breaker panel, in order to be safe. Then you will convert 220 volt circuit to 120.
I would see if you can exchange it for 220 A/C may cost a little more but worth it.better than going through all the hassle.

Really, don't even open the panel at the mains unless you are ready to die. Have an electrician do it. Note amp draw required by AC unit, ensure your wire size is adequate.

sure you can. see first answer. oh and you will have to replace the outlet. BUT instead, i'd return ac for a 220 v one. it will use less electrical, (sorta, maybe). i hate those little 110 window units.
and the more i think about it, the more i think the 110 probably will not be sufficient for your cooling needs. could be why there is a 220 outlet there. check the cooling capacity on 110 and compare to a 220 and consider electrical usage/load on unit etc. you may very well be A LOT better off going with a 220 unit.
sop is right, sorta! easier though to return the unit. Locate the breaker, turn it off, remove the two wires, tape up one of them. remove the 220 breaker and replace with 110, reattach the one black wire, change the receptacle and plug in your unit.
I would go with the "return" answers, A 220 unit will not only use less power, it will last longer and do a much better job.
The answers on how to convert a 220 to a 110 are correct. Just be sure to replace the breaker with a single pole 110 breaker just in case. Be sure to mark it properly.

You do as you please, but I would suggest, taking you 110 back and see if you can trade if for a 220, for not too much more money. I am sure you will be much more satisfied.

sell the a/c as the stepdown transformer cost a lots, beside the transformer heat is annoying.
That is fairly easy. You change the wire connections in the electrical service box and replace the 220 outlet with a 110. I would recommend an electrician to work in the box. Should only take a few minutes to do.
Yes you can change it to 110 volt. I would get a AC that runs on 220 volt it will cost you much less to run.
