I have been reading alot of positive feed about corn meal killing ants--the kind you make corn bread out of--just put some around where the ants are and it will plug up the works in them and boom they are gonners. You can also sprinkle diatomateous earth around. Neither of these is instant but will work. I also found plain dish soap runs them off but doesn't kill them--I used to put a ribbon of Dove on the back of my counter and they would go away.
I've used dish soap and water on ants. It seems to saturate the colony but only forces an evacuation.
