How do I correctly measure my window for an air conditioner?

Question:My window is 20x20 and the air conditioner i'm interested in is 12x17.28x11.15. Is this going to fit? How do I know? I have never bought a window air conditioner before and I feel overwhelmed and confused.

Answers:
Measure the opening of the window. If the dimensions you gave are correct, it will fit. They have 'filler' panels to block out the openings. It really is that easy.

It will fit. You might need a board to place it on if it is an aluminum frame window.
