How should I wire a detached shed?

Question:The shed is 300 feet from my source of power. I want to run lights and some small hand tools.

Answers:
calculator says you need a #3 wire to do 20 amps,,gonna be costly,,but what tools are you running,,low voltage will burn them up

a 10 will give you 105.5 volts
a 12 will give you 97 volts

james s where are you from, only thing you got right was dig the ditch

dont run phone and electricity in same conduit,,if you want phone get direct burial and throw it in ditch

Master sparkey where are you coming up with your info--voltage drop after 200'--you're nuts

Wow 300ft. With the price of copper wire that's going to be expensive. First u need to dig a trench about 3ft. deep from your shed to your breaker box. drop in 1 in. plastic conduit, that will give u room to run a phone line also. run 12/3 or 10/3 wire from fuse box to secondary box in shed. that will give u 2 circuits in shed. Run wire off 20 amp breaker in box and 15 amp breaker in secondary box. That way if u trip a breaker in shed u won't have to run back to house to reset. Buy your wire in winter it's cheaper. Dig trench in summer, it's warmer and easier.
buy underground rated wire and bury it.
If all you need is a plug a switch 20 amp's run 10-2 UF cable designed for direct burial. 10 gauge because of the distance you get a voltage drop after 200 FT bury it 24" in ground install junction box that will feed your plugs and lights. one 20 amp circuit to the house panel. protect the cable at both ends with 1" PVC conduit.
