How do you fix loud, creaky wooden stairs?

Question:

Answers:
The best way I know of is to take the steps off, clean, apply a glue, like Liquid Nails and then nail or use a finish screw to reattach.

the creaks in woodwork are caused from the nails rubbing against the wood itself the easiest way to fix this is to pull up the nails and squeeze some baby powder into the nail holes and then put the nails back. the powder will provide a dry lubrication to the wood and allow the nail and wood to rub against one another without making noise.
If you have access to the underside of the stairs, you can drive some small wooden shims into the cracks between the stair tread and the risers. This will give the top wood something to support itself on. Your nails are just working up and down and squeaking.
Drive a few ring shank finishing nails through the stairs into the risers. use a nail set to sink the nails. You can add some appropriately colored wood putty on top of nails after they are driven below the surface and paint or polyeurethane to match. Syringing some glue in between step and riser may help for a while.
replace your nails with screws or just screw the step LOL
