I have to refill a cement crack on my step, how do I do this without the cement spewing over the side?

Try this trick for a small job. Build up a duct tape border on either side of the crack and on the end. it must be clean to stick well. After you have taped it cut into the duct tape following the crack and leaving at least a 1/2 in on each side of the crack that you outlined. Using a small chisel open up the crack a bit, again following the crack all the way ( use safety glasses). Brush out crack. Using a spray bottle of water, wet the area to have cement. Fill the area with cement , working it into joint. Smooth it out as best you can. Leave 24hrs min. pull duct tape; perfect repair!

Just put a little bit, then more if it need more, until you fill the crack. If you spill a little, you can use a scraper to scrape it off or spread it evenly over the area.
the cement should be mixed so that it does not spill. you may have put too much water in it which makes the concrete weaker.
On something like that I would use patching cement. It will stick better and not drip so much.Plus it wont crack again like regular cement will when used as a patch. Mix it thick like peanut butter. You can get it at any home store.
In this situation I would use a hydraulic cement. This product will set up in 3-5 minutes. You could start from the bottom up and use a trowel to smooth it out. Just mix up what you can use in the alloted time and you are home free. Piece of cake. good luck.
i saw cement in tubes like chaulk. lowes had it? no mess to clean up. good luck
