Help hanging an interior door!!?
Question:i am replacing the interior doors in my house, (probably bit off more than i can chew as i have no idea how to!) the old doors are 23 3/4" wide, while the new doors are 24". i know i have to clean out an area for the hinges on the new door, but am unsure how to make sure it is lined up correctly with the existing hinge area on the door frame. when i dry fit the door it was very snug. please pretend you are speaking to a 5 year old or moron when explaining this! ha-ha!
Answers:
OK. First, you'll need to plane the edge of the door to make it the correct width. This needs to be done on the hinge side before you mortise (recess) in the hinges -- unless your new doors don't have the pre-drilled door knobs holes. If you plane to much off the door on the knob side, then the door knob location is adversely affected. Measure your existing doors at each opening (in case they differ per door) and mark your hinge locations. Chisel out the door to receive the door hinges. Hopefully they're square edged hinges since the rounded ones need to routered out instead of chiseled. Install your hinges and set the door to see how it fits. Adjust as needed. Email me if you need more help.
Running the door through a joiner before its hung will shave enough off let it swing freely; or use a belt sander (but be careful!)
To match the hinges - First, mount the old hinges onto the frame, then slip a yard stick under the door, then set it into place in the frame then mark out where the hinges go.
hi
hope i can help you with that
1. there a door side hinge
look at the door from the top there one side of the door edge that is bevel that side is the door handle side the thother end is the hinge side
the bevel is facing in so the door does not rub against the door frame when you close it
if you need to shave the door to 23 3/4 do it on the hinge side
maybe this will help you
