How to build/lay a patio?
Question:We want a patio in our backyard and my husband is a hard-core do-it-yourselfer. We're thinking of just a concrete patio as it is probably cheaper but I'd like to hear more about what's involved. I've glanced at a few books on the subject but like hearing from other people. The area we're doing is 16 feet by 17 feet. Any tips? Costs involved? Materials?
Thanks!

If you are a do it yourself-er, you don't want to hear "hire a pro". To control the concrete project, and to add flair. I would use 1x4 cedar (or cca) lay out a grid pattern to suit your skill and eye and pour each section, leaving the boards in place. you can add varying color to the sections to enhance even more. I mix cheap latex paint into the concrete before pouring into the form. 1/8th to the foot is plenty of slope without being noticed when placing chairs.
if you do it in concrete it will take 3.5 yards. If he doesnt know anything about concrete its better to pay someone to form and finish especially if its going to be directly beside your house. (drainage purposes only. 1/4 of an inch drop per so many feet.) so it will drain water away from the house. Concrete prices vary per town.
