Can I mix oil paint with oil stain to make it darker?

Question:

Answers:
Depends on what kind of oil paint you're talking about.

Here's a way to custom match a stain that you can use to darken your stain.

Start with a stain that is slightly lighter than what you want. Go to a store where they sell artist's oil paints and buy the oil paint that comes in a tube. Grumbacher is one brand that is very good. Choose a color that is darker than your stain. It must be of the same color family, that is if your stain is yellowish-brown to brown you would choose colors like raw umber, burnt umber, raw sienna, burnt sienna. It helps to have a good eye for color when doing this. Squeeze a small amount of the oil paint from the tube into the stain and stir thoroughly. Test the color. Add a bit more if necessary, or maybe a bit of a different color. Always mix thoroughly and test to finally get the color you want. Be careful to not add too much paint as this will slow the drying time of the stain a lot. This part is very important. If you have to add too much paint you have either chosen the wrong base stain or the wrong paint... time to start over.

I have used this method to custom match replacement woodwork and cabinets. If you do this a while you will quickly be able to look at a piece of woodwork and know what base stain to start with and what color to add.

I wouldn't think so. There is a difference between paint and stain. You gotta pick one or the other. Just buy it darker.
NO.
However.
When you put stain on wood, the longer it sets before you wipe it off, the more time it has to penetrate and darken. More coats, the darker it gets.
These are methods I used to use ...uh...Back in the old days...LOL

I would wet down the wood with water.
Then I would dab Indian Ink on the wood and allow it to sit for a bit - but not dry.
Wipe it off and wet it down again to repeat if necessary. Idea here is to get the grain dark- the more ink absorbed the darker the grain lines will be. if it is not absorbing the ink directly like this then water the ink down very little at a time, and do not over do it with the wetting down of the wood. You want a nice dampness to the wood, not soaking wet.

Don't forget you can mix stains to make a custom stain - but in staining if you want dark then you have to get a stain that is about two good shades darker than what you want.
Are you making the Paint darker,or the stain darker? Either way, mixing the two together won't solve the problem. With both products, you need to add pigment to deepen the color. You could take a baggy, and ask the sales person in the paint dept. to give you a squirt of tint.I've done it for customers plenty of times. You just need to figure out what color tint you want. Asking for more than one color will probably get you nothing. But one squirt, will get you one squirt of tint. Beware though, a drop of tint ,goes a long way, and black might not get you to the color your looking for. Try asking for the neutral tint base. Sorry but I can't remember the tints color number. Maybe, LY. or NTL. You can add the tint to either the stain, or the paint. Bye
