Painting a wood desk ?

Question:i have a solid wood desk and i want to paint it like blue. what are the steps i need to take to make the paint look good and last longer? i dont have a sander.

Answers:
I recommend to hand sand the surface as good as you can. Remove any dirt with damp rag. Depending on the type of paint your using, I would put a primer coat on. There is a semi gloss enamel I use and its a brushless paint. In other words when you paint with it, it will not show paint brush marks. I refinished my kitchen cabinets using this proceedure and I had a lot of good comments about them. Happy painting. :)

If it's unfinished, your task is easy. Buy a wood primer and follow with your choice of paint. You can go the extra mile by lacquering it with a number of clear coat /wood hardeners. Just be sure to do that outside.
If your wood desk has a stain or other finish, you may have to get a stain/finish remover. Apply in small sections -let it set according to recommendations- and scrape. Then you'll need to wash it down and sand it a bit to give the wood some tooth to hold on to your primer and paint.

Hope this helps
The steps you take will depend on how the desk is finished now.

If your desk is new and unfinished wood the make sure you have a smooth surface by sanding it lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Remove any dust with damp cloth or tack cloth.
Use a good quality interior oil primer - the for your paint use a Melamine paint. Melamine paint is more chip ristant than ordinary wall paint and its what is recommended for this type of surface where things will be moving around on it and being used. Plus it is more washable than your wall paint.

If your desk has a paint or stain on it already (or any type of glossy finish) then to save yourself the time and work of either sanding or stripping it use the proper primer before you add your top coat. All you need to do it make sure there is nothing that is peeling and then prime with BIN (made by Zinsser). This will adhere to your surface and give you a way to proceed to paint with your Melamine. The BIN cures faster and seals in what you are painting over.

Hope this helps.
OK here we go this is going to be easier than you think buy some deck wash spray it on let it sit brush with stiff brush hose off. then paint. Oh go to a home center Home Depot Lowes buy the deck wash there and BUY DECK STAIN ONLY you can get deck stain that looks like paint and have it mixed to the color you want
lightly sand by hand, primer paint white then paint it blue. good luck
