1 layer of mud on new drywall?

Question:I am remodeling our house. I have hung all the drywall and have put on the first layer of mud/joint compound and sanded the first layer. It looks and feels pretty smooth with a couple of exceptions. Could I get away with only doing 1 layer of mud on the drywal before I texture? I will be doing an orange peel texture once I get this figured out. What is the worst that could happen if I only did 1 layer? Seems to me that the first layer worked out pretty well and the texture will hide anything I may have missed.

The sanding was incredibly time consuming and incredibly hard to clean up. Also, we are scheduled for carpet on Tuesday and a second layer of mud would put me a day behind. If i can avoid it at all, I would like to.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.

Mike

you should be totally fine since you are doing the orange peel. my mom had this done to her walls (she hired some guys) and I am pretty sure that they only did one layer. I watched them put the mud on and then the next day they were doin the orange peel. you'll be ok just go for it!

i wouldn't recommend it. i just finished my basement and tried to get away with one coat on the ceiling because i was texturing and you can see the seams. its not too bad but i am a perfectionist. i did two or three coats on all the walls and they look perfect. i used a shopvac atachment to cut down on the dust. I know it's a lot of work. hope everything goes well.
You should be fine so long as there isn't any major imperfections in the first coat of mud.
You really need at least one more coat. The surface seems smooth now because the rough edges have been smoothed out to prepare for the next coat. What you can't see are the gentle waves at the joints and screw or nail holes. Another coat will feather these out over a wider area. You will be able to see these after you finish, textured or not.
3 is best , but you can get buy with 2. it,s the same thing as bondoing a dent in a car. Fetheredgeing one cote will never make the dent dissapear.
get a bag of 20 set you mix it with water it it sets up in 20 mins and with in a coupl of hours you should be able to sand it go to sherwin williams they should have a sander that hokes up to your shop vac 98 % dust free
my advise is to set a lamp on one end of the wall and look for the shadows this will show you how good it really is. also , Sheetrock is tapered slightly around the edges allowing for the proper amount of mud and no matter about the texture the seems will still be visible if not done right the quick-set stuff is a good idea but be ready to sand as soon as it sets because it gets very hard if left too long
