How to build an awning?

What type? Fabric, wood or metal? Lets go wood frame...
According to your span and what type things may vary on each. The most home awnings has the support posts set in concrete 8 feet apart using treated 4x4s or 6x6s. Then place a header boards, normally 2x6s along front and just under soffit leaving about a 2" gap leaving room for your roof. (be sure you hit the studs)
Apply hangers to inside of headers you just placed up and cut and place 2x4 rafters 16" on center and staying flush to top of the headers. Now do you want metal, rubber or shingle roof?
