What's the best way to repair damaged drywall?

Question:My husband and I have (not so gracefully) removed wallpaper in our kitchen. What a nightmare I might add. Anyway, we have some spots on the leftover drywall that have been damaged. Also, there appears to be some water damage above the sink. Any advice on how to fix this before we paint it? Thanks!

Answers:
you need to "skim coat" it.

The way you do it tricky... a pro should do this... you take wallboard compound (in the green 5 gal can) and apply a thin coat to make the wall even again. once it dries you sand until smooth and level..

this takes experience, and could be done by many painters...

Get some drywall mud to smooth over the rough spots and some Kilz primer to cover the water damage.
PS- the primer only covers the damage not repair it.
If it's a minor damage, a gypsum/drywall putty/mud would be good. Your local DIY store would have it.

As for the water damaged part, perhaps you will need to have that portion of that drywall patched or changed for a smoother finish.

Good luck on your decorating!

depending on how bad the water damage is . take your finger and slightly push on the drywall . if it gives easily then you need to replace it . if you dont it will just crumble anyways when it gets wet again. if it doesnt thank your stars and just get some spackling compund and a putty knife and fill the holes . wait for it to dry and sand smooth . if you have to replace the drywall above the sink i recommend "green board" it is specifically designed for wet locations . good luck
As mentioned, use drywall mud --don't use spackle as it is designed just for nail or screw holes.
