What steps do I take to replace lino in my bathroom?

Question:Can an inexperienced layman manage this task? What adhesive must I use? How do I get the old lino off the floor?

Answers:
It may just 'lift' off. You may need to hire a 'heater' [or use a hair-dryer] to soften it before you can take it up. You may just have to scrape it off. Test a corner or a piece you can get to and make a decision as to the method which suits your situation best. Personally, I would NOT be putting lino back on the bathroom floor. I think the best option is ceramic tiles, with a non slip surface. They will last a lot longer and look much nicer and be easier to clean. Your local hardware store will have all the 'how to's' to assist you in this project [and may even run workshops for free] and unless you are totally not a DIYer, you should have no problems attempting this yourself.

Is the old flooring loose and coming up or is it firmly attached to the subfloor? Assuming the old floor is firmly attached and not loose, you may be able to apply the new flooring over the old one. I had a similar situation. I had a flooring with a slight texture in it and Armstrong makes a floor leveling compound that will fill in the depressions of any texturing to make a flat, level surface (important). Then I was able to apply the new floor over it. Did it several years ago and the floor still looks fine. I would suggest checking with the manufacturer of the new flooring material or the supplier where you buy it though just to be sure. Whatever you do, it will require some work and patience. You should remove the toilet to install the flooring underneath it. Depending on the situation, it could get a little tricky. If you are not at all handy with projects such as this you might consider hiring someone if you can afford it.
