you have to use acid to etch the concrete first and only then will it accept a stain unless it's a new slab and you can mix pigment in first.

it will not give you a even color. and if its oil based stain it will take it forever to dry. you will be better off with the concrete stain
Staining concrete is becoming a DIY project. Check your local phone book under concrete and I'm sure you will find a store that will sale the acid and give you suggestions on how to do it.
