i saw a really neat idea the other day on a MAKEOVER show... get the units from Target/Walmart/K-mart that u put together that make shelves/drawers/cubes...etc... stack them together... to form the length & size of u'r bed & then put the mattress on top. That way the kids could use the drawers/shelves/ cubes for shoes/books/ clothes.. etc & things wouldn't b shoved under the bed. I thot it was a really neat idea. And the units can always b changed up if u want the drawers/cubes/shelves in a different way. Then as they grow, or move on.. u can use the units for other things for storage/etc..
they come white & natural & if that isn't a good color then paint them. U can paint them b/4 assembling them & they r really easy.
I used several to create my craft room
i hope that gives u an idea
or try http://www.hgtv.com or http://www.diynetwork.com for plans
i've seen some simple ideas on their shows.
I don't know of a mattress that thin, so I'm quessing you are going to make the whole bed. Make a 2x4 frame with outside dimensions of 27 x 55. Screw on 2 x 4 legs. Wrap rope around 2 x 4 sides leaving approx 6 " space between each wrap. Secure ends of rope by nailing to frame. Next, weave rope from foot to head of frame wrapping around 2 x 4's and so on. Any small pad, thick blanket on top and you'll have a very comfortable bed. You could also use canvas/tarp instead of rope. Just staple it to the frame.
