Portable Air conditioner- how to run an exhaust hose through crank window that open out?
Question:My apartment has only crank windows that open out. The Portable A/C usually won't work with this kind of windows. Does anyone has ideas how to make it work? It's so damn hot in my apartment...help!

I have a portable A/C unit and it's vented out a crank style window. What I did was took out the screen and cut a piece of 3/8 plywood the same size. Then I cut out a hole in it to fit the mounting bracket for the two hoses for the A/C unit and screwed it on. Then I put it into the window just like the screen. A couple small screws at the bottom and top hold it in place. Works great!! My place is nice and cool.
I have an ulterior motive for answering this! I recently bought a portable A/C and haven't yet used it, so I want to know how well yours works. The instructions that came with mine stated that the hose need not go through the screen, so I'm wondering if you can remove a pane of glass and replace it with a piece of plexiglass with a cut-out for the hose. Since you're in an apt., be sure to put the pane away safely for re-installation later!! I also think I remember reading that it can also be vented through a door opened just the width of the hose. You can do that with the window, too...not the most efficient use of air conditioning, but it beats the heck out of nothing!! Personally, I would go the plexiglass route.
