This site has checklists for everything. It also has blank sheets so that you can make your own.

If this is your first home of your own, then you would need to start with just the basics.

Bed set

Towels and wash clothes -- at least 7

Shower curtain

Basic toiletries

Set of dishes -- at least for 4 -- plates, bowls, cups, silverware

Basic cleaning supplies -- sponges, laundry detergent, dish soap, glass cleaner, bleach, toilet cleaner -- get a bag of washable rags it will save you a lot of money over paper towels.

Hangers

Pots and Pans -- at least two different size pots and one large skillet are a good start you can add more later

Cooking utensils and can opener -- this are musts

Knives -- you will need to have different sizes for different jobs -- it is much easier to cut things with a proper size knife-- buy a block of quality knives so that you won't end up having to buy new ones again in a couple of months or a lot of Band-Aids

Stock your pantry with the basics -- salt, sugar, butter, bread, etc anything that you eat a lot of

Tools -- Be sure to have at least two screw drivers (Phillips and flat head), a hammer, a wrench, light bulbs, tape, nails, screws, tape measurer, and pliers

Flashlight and batteries -- you will need these at least once!

Telephone book

Garbage can & bags -- you may want more than one i.e. bathroom, bedroom, kitchen

You can build as you go. You do not have to have everything right away. You might get something ahead of time only to realize that it won't work in your new place. Take your time and let your new place grow around you. New shoes or new jeans take a while to break in and so does a new place. Trust me. I just moved and I cannot see the other side of my living room through the boxes. I know it is there though... ;)
